Mary is my new Down Under Doll |
I remember hearing a song that was called, "Second Hand Rose" performed by Fanny Brice (and Barbara Streisand.) Some of the lyrics included:
Father has a business, strictly second hand.
Ev'rything from toothpicks, to a baby grand.
Stuff in our apartment, comes from Father's store,
Even things I'm wearing, someone wore before.
It's no wonder that I feel abused.
I never have a thing that ain't been used.
I'm wearing second hand hats, second hand clothes,
That's why they call me second hand Rose...
Like Rose, I wore hand-me-downs, garage sale selections and thrift store fashions…and I was one of the best-dressed kids in town! Back then, only "poor" people wore clothes that didn’t come from the department store. In order to prevent shame and embarrassment, we kept the origins of our wardrobe a big secret.
Thankfully, times have changed and the smartest consumer buys top brand fashions with labels that we know and love for a ridiculous small fraction of the original price. I am still wearing "second hand clothes," but this time I am not ashamed to admit it!
I love making all kinds of crafts, fashions and quilts. I hope that you will enjoy peeking in my closets to see who else is wearing second hand clothes.
